Sello Hatang sat down with Dr Gerhard Ferreira, founder of Nexus and Healthcare Framework, on POWER Week. The full conversation is below.
About the guest
Dr Gerhard Ferreira is a medical doctor with three decades of clinical experience and a co-founder of Nexus Intelligence, the South African medical AI company behind Nexus AI CXR.
Nexus AI CXR is a CE MDR Class IIb certified computer-aided detection platform, developed under a long-term development and commercialisation agreement with Google LLC and certified by TÜV SÜD under EU Regulation 2017/745. It screens chest X-rays for tuberculosis and other significant lung abnormalities in as little as 45 seconds, online or entirely offline. In the Stop TB Partnership's independent evaluation of twelve commercially available CAD products, published in The Lancet Digital Health, it recorded the second-highest area under the curve of the twelve and the highest sensitivity of all of them at the fixed operating threshold.
The platform has analysed approximately 50,000 chest X-rays across some 44 installations in six countries. It supports national tuberculosis programmes with Ministries of Health in Côte d'Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Sierra Leone, is quality-assessed for Global Fund financing and available through PFSCM / Wambo, and has been deployed nearly four kilometres underground at Mponeng Gold Mine, the deepest point on Earth at which such technology has been operational.
