On 15 September 2026, Google published "Building AI to accelerate science and improve lives" by James Manyika, Senior Vice President for Research, Labs, Technology and Society. It sets out where Google's AI is being applied across health, natural disaster and weather resilience, learning and economic opportunity.
In the section on health, it says this:
James Manyika, Google, "Building AI to accelerate science and improve lives", 15 September 2026
Google CEO Sundar Pichai shared the piece on LinkedIn, and James Manyika reposted it. The figures quoted are Google's own.
The second time in a month
The blog follows Google Cloud Summit Johannesburg, the first Google Cloud Summit held in Africa, where James Manyika presented Nexus Intelligence from the keynote stage.
What sits behind the sentence
Nexus AI CXR was developed in collaboration with Google under a Master Licence, Development and Commercialisation Agreement with Google LLC, concluded in 2023, and engineered by Nexus into a CE MDR Class IIb certified medical device for chest X-ray triage. Nexus Intelligence is the legal manufacturer and independently owns the platform, the quality system and the certification.
Nexus AI CXR runs two models on every image: a general lung health engine that localises any abnormality in the lung fields, and a purpose-built tuberculosis detector. Instant AI-based chest X-ray triage can reduce the initial screening turnaround from hours or days to under 45 seconds per study, supporting same-day decisions and faster referral.
- → Independently evaluated by the Stop TB Partnership and published in The Lancet Digital Health: second-highest AUC of twelve commercially available CAD products, 0.897 (95% CI 0.872-0.922)
- → Global Fund quality-approved and available through PFSCM / Wambo
- → More than 15,000 in-kind screenings delivered to underserved communities through the Nexus and Google social impact drive
To see the work named in that company is recognition of what the screening teams on the ground have achieved: the radiographers, nurses and programme staff in Côte d'Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sierra Leone, South Africa and beyond who put chest X-ray AI to work where radiologists are scarce.
